South Beach vs. Miami Beach: Pros and Cons

Miami South Beach

When comparing South Beach to the other neighborhoods in Miami Beach, Mid-Beach and North Beach, several factors come into play, including attractions, amenities, and atmosphere.

South Beach, known for its vibrant energy and iconic Art Deco architecture, boasts a plethora of attractions ranging from pristine beaches and trendy boutiques to world-class dining and nightlife. Its central location makes it a convenient hub for tourists, offering a wide array of accommodations ranging from boutique hotels to luxury resorts. South Beach’s nightlife scene is legendary, with chic clubs, rooftop bars, and beachfront parties that cater to every taste, ensuring an electrifying experience for visitors, and they are more likely to be open very late. Some nightclubs and bars are open as late as 5am in Miami Beach, and certain other neighborhoods of Miami.

In contrast, Mid-Beach exudes a more relaxed and upscale vibe, with luxurious resorts lining its expansive beaches. This neighborhood appeals to those seeking a quieter retreat while still enjoying proximity to South Beach’s attractions. Accommodations in Mid-Beach tend to be more lavish, offering spacious rooms and lavish amenities. While nightlife options may be fewer compared to South Beach, Mid-Beach still offers upscale dining and entertainment venues for a refined experience.

On the other hand, North Beach offers a laid-back atmosphere with a mix of residential and tourist-friendly areas. Its wide, sandy beaches and family-friendly amenities make it popular among vacationing families and locals alike. Accommodations in North Beach range from budget-friendly hotels to cozy beachfront condos, catering to a diverse range of travelers. While the nightlife in North Beach may be more subdued compared to South Beach, visitors can still find beachside bars and casual eateries for a relaxed evening out. Also, North Beach is close to Bal Harbour, which offers upper tier shopping at the Bal Harbour Shops at 9700 Collins Avenue, as well as some of Miami’s chicest dining spots when you want to keep it classy and impress.

Luxury Hotels and Resorts for a Bachelorette Stay

South Beach Ocean Drive Storefront

First, let’s talk about accommodations. You’ll need a place to sleep, and there are tons of options, so let’s help you narrow that down.

South Beach

For an upscale stay at a place you can enjoy fine dining and partying without having to leave the grounds, SLS South Beach at 1701 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139 is the go-to in South Beach. SLS is all about vibe. Relax in a luxurious room. Wine and dine at popular Katsuya or Elcielo. Chill at the pool or beach during the day and party at night at Hyde Beach, often featuring some of the hottest local and international DJs.

1 Hotel at 2341 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139 is another swanky, beachside option with luxury rooms and a gorgeous rooftop pool, restaurant and bar area, which also feature DJs during prime hours.

For the more budget-minded, or those who prefer to be off the beach in the thick of the action, Esmé Miami Beach at 1438 Washington Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139 feels more luxurious than it costs, and boasts a dreamy rooftop pool, restaurant and bar area. The pool is a bit small here, but that’s outweighed by its location right over the pedestrian-only section of charming Española Way, lined with several excellent, sidewalk cafe-style restaurants and bars – an excellent spot for great food and drink, fun and people watching.

Mid Beach

For the luxury-minded, look no further than the massive Fontainebleau at 4441 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140. This former Rat Pack hangout went through a $1 billion renovation completed in 2007. It features 12 restaurants, including Hakkasan and Mirabella, world-famous, velvet rope nightclub LIV, and an enormous multi-pool oasis and beach access.

For a refined and unique, upscale beachside experience, Faena at 3201 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140 is sure to turn heads. You can’t miss the glass case containing a 24k gold-coated, wooly mammoth fossil in Faena’s Mammoth Garden. Faena also features fine dining, as well as 2 popular bars with different feels for your late night needs.

If you are on a budget, Freehand Miami at 2727 Indian Creek Dr, Miami Beach, FL 33140 is about the fanciest hostel you’ll ever find. It features Broken Shaker, an internationally-ranked mixology bar with loads of outdoor seating in their charming pool and garden area, and highly-rated restaurant, 27, which features nightclub Eagle Room upstairs Wednesday through Saturday nights, hosting some of the best local and international DJs. Eagle Room features a roped-off, private area that is the perfect place for the girls to let loose, late night.

North Beach

While Surfside and Bal Harbour are just north of North Beach, the best luxury accommodations are in those neighborhoods, and they are small communities blocks north of North Beach, so we will set our sites there for a fancy place for the ladies to lounge and sleep.

The Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club at 9011 Collins Ave, Surfside, FL 33154 embodies ultimate luxury, offering a comprehensive array of amenities. Featuring chic contemporary Miami design, breathtaking ocean vistas, an opulent champagne bar, exquisite Italian cuisine, and the added perk of a private yacht, it truly caters to every desire. Its diverse range of activities ensures enjoyment for both families and couples alike.

The Ritz Carlton Bal Harbour at 10295 Collins Ave, Bal Harbour, FL 33154 boasts a prime location at the northern tip of Miami Beach, offering unparalleled 360-degree ocean panoramas. Indulge in a farm-to-fork dining experience, relax in luxurious beach cabanas, rejuvenate at the lavish spa, and bask in the splendor of the elevated pool deck. Every detail has been meticulously considered at this extraordinary destination.

A more budget-minded option that is actually in North Beach is MB Hotel, Trademark Collection by Wyndham at 6525 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33141. MB Hotel offers a host of amenities including a pool, beach service, and on-site bars and is close to lots of great restaurants and attractions. It’s just 22 blocks north of South Beach.

Downtown Miami

Downtown Miami has a more urban feel, and may not be the comfiest neighborhood to stay in, but there are definitely standouts here, it’s centrally-located, and home to many attractions, like Kaseya Center, Adrienne Arsht Center, Bayside Marketplace, Miamarina and a few of Miami’s top museums.

The Kimpton EPIC Hotel at 270 Biscayne Blvd Way, Miami, FL 33131 is quite luxurious, and hosts Japanese hotspot, Zuma, a sleek and minimalist eatery offering stunning views of the Miami River.

Wynwood

Wynwood is Miami’s hip art district, and it is like no other art district in the world. It hosts the world-renowned street art museum, Wynwood Walls, and it’s the most graffiti-dense neighborhood on the planet!

Wynwood actually has only one proper hotel, Arlo Wynwood, at 2217 NW Miami Ct, Miami, FL 33127. Room rates are very reasonable and a great value. The rooftop pool deck sports 360 views of the area, the hotel sports another rooftop restaurant and bar, Higher Ground, on the 3rd floor, while lobby restaurant, Marygold’s, is run by chef Brad Kilgore who was named Best New Chef in America by Food & Wine Magazine in 2016.

Brickell

Brickell is Miami’s most up-and-coming neighborhood with lots of great lodging and foodie havens. It sports the nickname “Wall Street South” because it’s been Miami’s financial district since the 1970s, as it’s home to many international banks. Definitely a spot to consider for a phenomenal Miami bachelorette party.

For luxury accommodations, Mandarin Oriental at 500 Brickell Key Dr, Miami, FL 33131 is sure to impress the bachelorettes. La Mar at the Mandarin Oriental is known as one of Miami’s top waterside restaurants with Peruvian fare by star chef Gastón Acurio.

EAST Miami at 788 Brickell Plaza, Miami, FL 33131 is a notch down from Mandarin Oriental in terms of glitz and amenities, but it’s home to rooftop lounge, Sugar, which is a really fun spot for drinks and entertainment with top local DJs. Room rates are much more affordable, too.

Activities and Entertainment Options

Smiling guests on the Wynwood Arts Tour

Let’s focus on Miami’s nonstop nightlife, and where to find the party when sleep is not an option! Miami is home to several world-ranked nightclubs, including LIV, Club Space, Factory Town on the large side, and too many to count on the smaller side. Miami is also home to a constant flow of festivals, so if you time it right, you can catch Miami at its peak, but be prepared. We are also famous for being one of the worst cities for traffic in the world! If you don’t want to deal with heavy crowds and traffic, avoid Miami during peak periods.

Don’t worry, if you’re not an electronic dance music enthusiast, or your idea of a party is a bit more chill, we have lots of Miami bachelorette party ideas for you, too.

If you do want to go deep into Miami’s nightlife scene, and party ‘til the Sun comes up, it’s best to plan that in advance. You will either want to buy advance tickets or negotiate a table at the venue. It tends to get pricier if you wait until you get to the velvet ropes – – sometimes MUCH pricier than if you had planned in advance. Reserving a table will usually be based on a minimum bottle spend, which will be based on the number of guests. Tables at top venues can go for thousands of dollars, especially when the booked talent is very popular. Don’ worry, mixers are included. You just pay for the booze, but be prepared to pay several hundred dollars per bottle, plus a service charge. This will probably cost more per head than buying a ticket, but has the benefits of a place to sit, and not paying $20 or more per drink at the bar.

Let’s start with LIV at 4441 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140. LIV is a Miami classic, and that means it’s flashy, expensive, loud, and better to be prepared. LIV features some of the top international DJs and live acts. The musical genres can be quite different from night to night, so you’ll want to make sure the music is the style you want on the night you choose to go. You’ll want to have advance tickets, if you aren’t reserving a table. A table for 8 people will cost around $1500-$2500 depending on where the table is located, but those rates can surge when super popular acts are booked. Better to book your table in advance. They do get sold out. Unless you’re really on a budget, a table is the way to go. Anyway, if you’re really on a budget, LIV is probably not the place for you. Call LIV at (305) 674-4680 or click on livnightclub.com for more information.

Club Space at 34 NE 11th St, Miami, FL 33132 is an iconic Miami venue that has been running since the late 1990s, although it has changed location and ownership. Club Space is a much grittier, festival-like vibe than LIV, but that does not mean it costs less. It’s about as pricey as LIV. Veterans just call it “Space.” It’s ranked as one of the best electronic music clubs in the world, and features some of the most popular international DJs. Space can be very unforgiving at the door. Same deal as LIV. Reserve a pricey table, or buy advance tickets. Space frequently sells out. Be prepared for the possibility that Space’s dance floor will be so packed, you can hardly move. Another reason to reserve a table. Space is legendary for having a 24 hour liquor license, and often stays open until the next afternoon. On weekends of special events, their closing parties often go 36 hours straight. Brace yourself, ladies. Call (786) 357-6456 or click on clubspace.com for more information.

Factory Town at 4800 NW 37th Ave, Miami, FL 33142 is owned by the same people as Club Space. It’s much larger with multiple stages, most of which are outdoors and uncovered. It’s not open year round. It’s only open for special events, so plan accordingly. Not all stages have table seating. Note that there are VIP options that don’t include seating. They mostly provide access to backstage, VIP restrooms and VIP bars. Factory Town events go until 7am, which is 2 hours later than most venues, but not as late as Space! Click on factorytown.com for more information.

For a more laid back vibe, Broken Shaker at Freehand Miami, 2727 Indian Creek Dr, Miami Beach, FL 33140 is a comfy, outdoor venue known for their craft mixology adult beverages. They’ve been ranked amongst the best bars in the U.S. and the world in several publications over the years. Enjoy the sounds of some of Miami’s best DJs while sipping on one of their unique punches containing exotic ingredients. No reservation necessary. Click on brokenshaker.com or call (786) 476-7011 for more info.

Another fantastic spot for a chill night out is Lagniappe at 3425 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33137 which specializes in wine and charcuterie. Sit inside and listen to a live jazz band, or outside and listen to piped-in music while drinking a nice bottle of wine and enjoying prosciutto and cheese on their excellent French bread, and, wow, will you be surprised at the very reasonable prices on full bottles! No reservation necessary. Buy your bottle inside, and then find your own seating inside or outside. The bands are great, but sitting outside will be the power move for most. It’s a vibe back there! For more info click on lagniappehouse.com or call 305-576-0108.

Art Deco Sightseeing Destinations

Miami Beach contains the largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world! Over 800 properties! You probably won’t want to visit them all, but let’s cover some of the key places to visit, all in South Beach.

The Carlyle at 1250 Ocean Drive epitomizes classic Miami Beach Art Deco style, boasting a dazzling array of bold vertical piers, sleek horizontal lines, distinctive sunshades resembling visors, and gracefully curved corners. Exuding pure camp charm, it played a key role as the vibrant gay nightclub in The Birdcage. Its iconic Art Deco façade, virtually unchanged since its establishment in 1941, may also be familiar from its appearances in other cinematic classics such as Scarface and Bad Boys II. Discover this timeless gem near the intersection of 13th Street and Ocean Drive.

While Collins Avenue may lack the cohesive architectural spectacle of Ocean Drive, it still harbors several noteworthy gems, among them the Marlin. Designed in 1939 by L. Murray Dixon, this iconic establishment evokes the futuristic allure of sci-fi serials of yesteryear. Renovated to perfection, the hotel retains its distinctive “eyebrows” adorning the windows—a signature Dixon touch seen in his other properties—alongside its charming pastel-colored walls. Once owned by Chris Blackwell of Island records, the Marlin housed one of the city’s premier recording studios where many famous recording artists recorded. Discover this unique blend of history and modernity at 1200 Collins Avenue.

In May 2019, Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s iconic Cardozo South Beach emerged from a lavish $15 million revitalization project. The 80-year-old landmark, renowned for its silver screen appearances, has graced notable films like The Birdcage (1996), There’s Something About Mary (1998), and Marley & Me (2008). Infused with the vision of Miami’s esteemed power couple, the Cardozo now boasts a completely revamped interior, featuring a cozy check-in area leading to a serene private courtyard. Its exterior, illuminated by neon lights reminiscent of its 1930s heyday, has been meticulously restored to its former splendor. Visit this timeless gem at 1300 Ocean Drive, South Beach, and immerse yourself in its rich history and contemporary allure.

Probably the most important property to visit that is NOT Art Deco is Casa Casuarina, the former Versace mansion. It stands as a testament to opulence and grandeur on Miami’s Ocean Drive. Originally built in 1930, this exquisite Mediterranean-style villa became synonymous with luxury when fashion icon Gianni Versace acquired it in 1992. Adorned with intricate details and lavish décor, the mansion served as Versace’s private residence and a playground for the elite, until he was shot on its front steps in 1997. Today, Casa Casuarina is a boutique hotel and restaurant, offering guests a glimpse into the glamorous lifestyle of its former owner. From its iconic mosaic pool to its ornate architecture, every corner exudes timeless elegance and sophistication. Whether admiring its façade from the street or indulging in a luxurious stay within its walls, Casa Casuarina continues to captivate visitors with its unparalleled beauty and storied past at 1116 Ocean Dr.

Art Deco, Mediterranean, and MiMo (Miami Modern) represent three distinctive and interesting architectural styles found in Miami and Miami Beach, each with its own defining characteristics. Art Deco, flourishing in the early 20th century, showcases geometric shapes, bold colors, and intricate ornamentation, epitomizing elegance and modernity. Mediterranean architecture draws inspiration from Southern European countries, featuring stucco walls, tiled roofs, and arched windows, embodying warmth and simplicity with a connection to the outdoors. MiMo, emerging in the mid-20th century, embraces sleek lines, playful accents, and a futuristic aesthetic, reflecting Miami’s postwar boom and its embrace of modernism and innovation. These styles contribute to the rich architectural landscape of cities like Miami, offering a visual journey through different eras and influences.
